Everything you need to know about the e-petition Kenny is supporting.
Richmond, BC - July 9, 2020
MP Kenny Chiu is held a conference call on Wednesday July 8, 2020 in support of petition e-2640.
Petition e-2640 was initiated by Carlo Puche from Richmond, British Columbia and sponsored by Mr. Chiu. The petition requests that “citizens of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to join the international coalition and impose appropriate sanctions against China's passing of the controversial National Security Law for Hong Kong given that it is an infringement of the ‘One Country, Two Systems’ framework.”
Currently petition e-2640 has over 3600 confirmed signatories. The petition will remain open for signature until July 15, 2020, at 2:15 p.m.
During the call, Carlo Puche detailed the process which led him to the decision to create such a petition. In his words, “the very language of the security law infringes upon Hong Kong’s one country – two systems policy.” He continues to express concerns that the national security legislation will be used to increase the persecution of minority groups and those expressing democratic advocacy.
Supporting him, Father Richard Soo stated that “by forcing this new security law on the people of Hong Kong, China has stripped away all their human rights, destroyed the rule of law there, and reneged on their international obligation to give Hong Kong democracy.”
Mr. Chiu continued Canada has a vested interest in Hong Kong due to not only historical and economic ties but because over 300,000 Canadians reside there and that Canada is home to over 500,000 citizens of Hong Kong descent. He adds that he is “here as a facilitator and appreciates knowing the concern (of Canadians,) that [he] will continue to monitor the situation and deliver [their] voice and [their] will to the Canadian government.”
