Hong Kong - November 24, 2019
MP Kenny Chiu arrived home from Hong Kong safely after the November 24, 2019 District Council election, in which he acted as an independent observer.
“It was a good day for democracy in Hong Kong,” said MP Chiu. “Hong Kongers voted in record numbers and made a clear statement in support of democracy through peaceful participation.”
Chiu addressed the House of Commons for the first time today, taking the opportunity to remark upon this great achievement and thank his constituents for electing him.
“As someone who was born in Hong Kong, I am truly blessed to have the opportunity to serve as a Member of Parliament here in my adopted country of Canada,” said Chiu. “I would like to thank the people of Steveston – Richmond East for giving me this great opportunity. Thank you.”
Chiu served in the independent Electoral Observation Mission alongside other parliamentarians including those from the United Kingdom, Germany, Australia and Lithuania. In their collective assessment, the execution of the election itself was conducted in accordance with international standards of openness, fairness, and transparency.
